June 1st marked the one-year anniversary of whatdidninawear.com. It's been fun cataloging what I wear, day by day. But it's also been a bit of a challenge. On days when I just wanted to sink into the cushions and wear something sloppy, I’d remember, “You've got to look at least halfway put together for your site.” Sometimes it felt like having a mother peering over my shoulder saying, “You're going to wear THAT?!” Most of the time it's been terrific and I look forward to providing you, my visitors, with more thrifty inspiration.

If you haven't visited my site before, let me share my fashion philosophy. It's basically “find your own style and feel happy and comfortable about what you wear every day.” Bright colors attract me, and they're often what's on sale–chartreuse, purple, turquoise, shocking pink, orange. Being thrifty and inventive are also key to my fashion mantra. If something's too big, take it in. If you hate the buttons, replace them. If it's too short, add a border or cuffs. Don't like the color? Dye it. When you transform a garment, it'it feels like a real accomplishment.

A few thrift shopping tips: Allow enough time to sift through what's there. Wear as few layers as possible so you can try things on over your clothes–most thrift stores don't have changing rooms. Try to keep an open mind about what you're looking for–there may not be the perfect navy skirt but you could find an amazing vintage jacket instead.

By seriously shopping thrift, you could cut your clothing expenditures in half. But I do supplement thrift with jeans, blazers, and bits & pieces, from Target, H&M, The Gap, and Uniqlo. Then I add flavor with colorful tights and socks, inexpensive brooches and necklaces, and plenty of bandanas. For me, it's all down to trusting your fashion instinct and not getting sidetracked with trends.

Thanks for visiting whatdidninawear.com. Stop by often. Cheers!
